Amy Sciarretto Amy Sciarretto Amy Sciarretto/Rocknrolla Art

Music Journalist for KERRANG!, Alternative Press, Revolver, Decibel, Hit Parader, CMJ Weekly, CMJ Monthly, Guitar World, SPIN, VH1, Teen People, Outburn, Chord, Amp, Hails & Horns, Suckler, Ruin, Metal Maniac and many more – DJ & Now she is the publicist head honcho at Roadrunner Records – We felt a sudden urge to ask Amy Sciarretto some questions…

How are you doing?
Busy. Brokenhearted. A offsets B! I'm no bullshit, so I gave you the most honest answer there is. I was crushed beyond crushability last Fall – it's all a blur- and I will never be the same. Love does that. But I do not regret one second of it. I am a better person for the relationship that I had. A changed, better human being. Blessed, too.  Not bitter at all.

What are you doing these days?
Publicist for Roadrunner Records. Lead blogger for AOL Noisecreep, the best metal site to ever exist. Rock journalist for Rebel Ink, Outburn, 101D. Beauty Editor of BeautyNewsNYC.com. Thinking about writing my second book. Considering joining roller derby.  I am the balance of cute and evil. I want to ride motorcycles and write about lip gloss!

A normal day in the life of Amy Sciarretto?
Ha! Nightmarish and nonstop! I get more done before 9 AM then most folks do in an entire day. I get about 4 hours of sleep. I get up at 6:30 AM, drive to work, listen to Pantera's "Mouth for War" every morning to get my blood pumping, get to Roadrunner office, crank Howard Stern the entire day, talk to magazines/blogs/media all day long. Come home, throw on baseball or hockey, and write until midnight or 1 AM. Sleep. Do it all over again. There are often shows in between those waking and sleeping hours, as well.

Your Job/position title?
At Roadrunner, Director of Publicity, Media/Artist Relations. Also, freelance rock journalist (for 17 years now! But I don't look my age!  ) Wannabe kickboxer.  Consummate headbanger. Lover of metal.

What exactely is it that you do?
I deal with the god damn customers. Ok, that was a joke. It's a quote from Office Space! I publicize and write about metal. On one hand, I work to get all Roadrunner bands exposure in the media and press and I love doing that. On the other, I write about the best and brightest goings on in metal. I am also working diligently to become more awesome so that in a Darwinian sense, I am more desired by those who may have wronged me, mistakenly or not. I seriously listen to "Mouth for War" every day of my life and live by Phil's words: I've moved mountains with less. When I channel my hate (hurt, for me) into productive, I don't find it hard to impress…The strength of many to crush who might stop me!

Describe a normal day at work
It's never normal. Putting out fires, managing crises, making shit happen, working for months at a time to secure coverage in non-traditional outlets, by feeding people information, pitching, securing and setting up coverage for the bands I work with; writing marketing plans, organizing clippings, writing press releases and bios;  on the other side, writing, writing, writing. About music.

How long have you been doing this?
Since 1994. In many capacities.

If you weren`t doing this, what would you be doing?
Planting tomatoes in a garden that I would harvest and turn into gravy (tomato sauce), married to an Italian man and having his babies. That or a brain surgeon! I am doing what I love. So I am blessed and privileged.  I would love to be a roller derby champ, a metal guitarist or a publicist for a sports team.

Who would you like to work with?
I have worked with and/or interviewed almost everyone, from Leo DiCaprio (more beautiful and distractingly good looking in person than he is on film) to Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam to Phil Anselmo to Mike Patton!

Best artists to work with (tell us the truth and not just the latest promo BS)?
Hmm… everyone has their quirks and their fun moments and I would probably give a different answer every day if you asked me this question seven days in a row. But today, I'd have to say Slipknot. It's never a dull moment with them and I love them so much that they make working with them challenging and fun, which oftentimes might seem like mutually exclusive elements.  I also have to say anytime I spend time with Killswitch Engage is always a pleasure, because Adam D. is so silly and so much fun to BS with that I look forward to any time I spend with them. I consider them friends. I have to say the same about DragonForce. Those guys are hilarious all the time and it's always a good time with them. Lastly, Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater is a consummate professional and I enjoy working with and for him, as well.

What do you feel you have missed out on by doing this?
I'm 34. I'm not married or with a kid yet, which I know my parents wish I was. However, if I had to clean hotel rooms, which are the epitome of the filth that humans can sink to – ever see how people leap a few rungs down the evolutionary ladder when they crash out in a hotel room? It's so gross and vile- if it meant that I could be with the person I loved who I am not currently with. Sigh. Sorry to get so personal, but heartbreak is the worst thing in the world, because it is never ever final. Death is. Heartbreak is not.

Best time of your life?
July 2007 through September 2009. And 2003 wasn't too bad either. I went to 200 concerts that year. Yes, I write down every show I have ever been to.

Biggest fuck up?
Too many too list. But what comes to mind immediately? In a bad mood, I accidentally said something not-so-nice about someone in an email and forwarded it to an intern and asked her to handle it and instead of starting a new email to the person, she forwarded my comments! I was embarrassed and had to eat some crow. It was my mistake and I was in a foul mood but I admit when I am wrong. Also, I was talking to a band at a fest once and said I liked their new album, but it wasn't the right band and I mixed the two up and looked foolish.

Favourite food?
Peanut butter. It's quite possibly the world's most perfect food. I also love pickles. And no, not together, although  I did try that once and not b/c I was pregnant!

Drink?
Water all day. OJ in the AM. Green tea all day. Also love Iced Venti Green Tea Lattes with Skim from Starbucks. I'll do a shot of Jager, too, and then forget my name and that I exist!

On the stereo?
Pantera 'Vulgar Display of Power,'; Iron Maiden 'Killers'; Far, 'Water & Solutions,'; Hatebreed, 'Satisfaction is the Death of Desire'; Sarah McLachlan 'Fumbling Towards Ecstacy'; Prince, 'Purple Rain' soundtrack. That's just today.

On screen? (Favourite movies/Tv):
Golden Girls. Not, I am not kidding. A brilliantly written show that lives and dies on the sarcastic, comedic timing of the late, great Bea Arthur. It's hilarious. The OC. Project Runway. Phillies Baseball. Eagles Football. Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Purple Rain. 24 Hour Party People. Back to School. Robert Schimmel comedy specials. Gremlins. Magnolia. The Hammer. Pretty in Pink. Office Space. Brokeback Mountain. I'm Not Scared.

Sports?
Baseball (Philadelphia Phillies); Football (Philadelphia Eagles); Hockey (Philadelphia Flyers). I grew up outside of Philly, in New Jersey, sooooo!

Tattoos?
I have many, so I love the look. I hate the pain. Anyone who says tattoos don't hurt has something the size of a quarter. I have a half sleeve on my left arm of the old school, traditional, sailor-pinup style, with all the things a girl needs: boxing gloves, brass knuckles, pearl necklace, lip gloss, diamonds, grenades, perfume, guns, fairy dust, skulls, switchblades. Tough but cute! I also have lyrics from a FAR song incorporated into an angle piece on my lower back. No, not a tramp stamp. I also have a heart sliced open by a razor blade on my right wrist. I think tattoos are very mainstream and not counter-cultural anymore and that's quite OK. When folks say WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WHEN YOU GET OLDER AND HAVE TATTOOS? I say I'm going to look at all my friends and peers who also have tattoos and remember my youth. All my tats can be covered with a three-quarter length tee and pants, really!

Groupies?
They'll always exist.

Transport?
2006 Black Honda Civic EX. Name is KITT, like Knight Rider!

Best live concert?
NEIL DIAMOND! That man puts on a show. He is an entertainer. Love that man. I saw him twice and both times, I danced my ass off like no one was watching. Then Slayer and Dillinger Escape Plan. I am exhausted after, but it's cathartic.

Best rock`n roll memory?
Anytime a band has shouted me out on stage. And it has happened many times. Shadows Fall, DevilDriver, Hatebreed, Glassjaw, to name a few! Once, I saw GJ in Philly at the TLA, and I saw Daryl Palumbo right before they hit the stage and in the middle of the first song, while he was singing, he stopped and said, "Hi Amy!" I blushed!

Vice of choice?
I drink rarely, I like to get green as often as I can, and I do not smoke. But I am a love addict. Seriously, I love to love and be loved and it'll probably be my downfall.

Who do you respect the most?
People who are kind to animals. I don't trust people who don't love animals.

What do you appreciate the most in your friends?
Having a conversation based solely on comedian quotes or on movie or song lyrics. Like I do with Brad. It's just being so connected that you understand what each other are saying based on works of art that you both love.

What does your friends appreciate the most in you?
Loyal to a fault. I'm like a lioness protecting cubs. Fuck with my friends and you've fucked with me.

State of the world today?
Every day we get is a gift. It may be a bomb wrapped in a pretty package some days or a brand new coupe with a big red bow around it, but it's still a gift. It depends on how you view it.

What will we see & hear of Amy Sciarretto in 2010?

You'll see more Roadrunner bands being covered in more media outlets and I'll try to get the book I have written in my head – trying to conjure the ending, but I have two alternate endings and can't decide which will work- onto paper. AOL Noisecreep will be where you can read me every day and see my interviews and guest panel podcasts! Noisecreep is the love of my life right now, while the other one is absent.

Thank you for your time!
