Behind the Scenes with Moviemaker & Author Ken Barr. He has toured with the likes of Kiss, Alice Cooper, Stone Temple Pilots and more…and from this came the book ”We are the road crew”. Ken speaks:

How are you doing?
Great ! I have a lot going on these days and I’m keeping really busy.

What are you doing these days?
I work in the entertainment field in Florida where I live, I make short films, I am writing my second book, and I’m doing book signings for my first book, ”We Are The Road Crew”.

A normal day in the life of Ken Barr?
Usually up by 2 or 3 AM, do some writing, or radio interviews for the book. Off to work by 5, home by 2 PM. Walk my dogs, work more on my book and film projects, cook dinner, and eat dinner with my wife. A full day.

Best time of your life?
The best time of my life is right now, I have never had more options. As much as I loved touring, when you are on the road the gig is your whole life, and you are always looking for your next gig. Now I have a great home life and the freedom to do whatever project I want. A couple of months ago a film I wrote had a premier at a local art gallery.

All time biggest fuck up?
Wow, there’s a long list to choose from. One time a friend and I were climbing along the third floor balconies at our hotel, trying to get into another crew guys room to steal his beer. Of course I lost my grip and fell.If not for the storage shed I crashed through, I’m afraid I might have been injured a lot worse than I was. That’s not the stupidest thing I’ve ever done, just the stupidest thing I’ll admit to.

Favourite food?
That goes back and forth between fish and chips, shepherds pie, and corned beef, I’m sure you can tell I come from an Irish family.

Drink?
Guinness !

On the stereo?
Depends, one day it might be Hinder or Nickelback, Johnny Lang, Christy Moore, The Pogues, I listen to a lot of music I have heard from all parts of the world, Ismael Lo from Africa, I toured with him and Angelique Kidjo back in ’93. Bob Marley is a big favorite. Anything I haven’t heard before is awesome, there’s nothing like discovering your new favorite band. I also love old recordings from vaudeville performers from the early 1900’s like Bert Williams. Alan Lomax worked for the Library of Congress recording regional music back then, he’s my hero.

On screen?
On movies I love old movies, WC Fields, Bowery Boys, any old Cagney or Bogart gangster movie. Marx Brothers.

Sports?
Big Iditarod fan, that’s the dogsled race in Alaska. I’ve been rooting for Lance Mackey for years and he’s won the last four.

Tattoos?
I have several so I guess they’re cool.

Sex?
It is better with a partner.

Drugs?
I partied my share back in the day and nearly died twice. I don’t reccommend them.

Rock`n Roll (State of it today compared to before)?

Rock and Roll is an ever changing beast that will never die. I love it, always will. I think the industry is a little more diverse now, which I think makes it a stronger industry.

Transport?
2005 Yamaha Road Star (Motorcycle), 2006 Suzuki Aerio (Car)

Best live concert?
Maynard Ferguson in 1978, it’s the first show I ever worked and I was blown away.

Best rock`n roll memory?
Loading into Madison Square Garden for the first time, 1988

Which musicians do you still keep in contact with?
I’m still in touch with most of the people I toured with, I think we were friends first and coworkers second.

Vice of choice?
Riding a couple of hundred miles on my motorcycle on a day off.

Who do you respect the most?
I’ve worked with a lot of people I respect quite a bit. I have been fortunate in that way. There are so many people I respect and call my friend that I couldn’t name just one.

What do you appreciate the most in your friends?
That they are my friends. I may not see an old road friend for a couple of years, but when we get together it’s like we were just hanging out the day before.

What do your friends appreciate the most in you?
I’d love to say my good looks, wit and charm, but I’d be lying. Mostly they appreciate it when I pick up the bar tab.

State of the world today?

I think that the world is in a state of change right now, but I have to believe that things will get better, Hang Tough !

What will we see & hear of Ken Barr in 2010?

Another book, more movies, an audiobook and beyond that, who knows?

Thank you for your time!
